How to Have 10,000 Followers and Still Borrow KES 500

Congratulations. You did it.

You spent months, maybe even years, creating content, replying to comments, learning how the algorithm works, fighting shadow bans that may or may not exist, and posting at exactly 7:43 PM because someone on YouTube said that was when your audience was most active.

And now, you have 10,000 followers.

Your posts get likes. Your videos get views. People know your name. Random people stop you and say, “Hey, aren’t you that guy from TikTok?” Life is good. Then your landlord calls. Suddenly, your 10,000 followers become completely useless.

You cannot send your landlord a screenshot of your follower count and say, “As you can see, I am actually doing very well.” Your landlord does not care. Your landlord wants KES 500. And unfortunately, Instagram followers are not yet accepted as legal tender. This is one of the great mysteries of being a creator. You can have thousands of people watching you every day and still find yourself sending that very uncomfortable message:

“Hey bro, unaweza nitumia 500? Nitarudisha kesho.”

Meanwhile, just three hours earlier, you were online telling 8,000 people how to build confidence, start a business, improve their finances, become productive, fix their relationships, and possibly achieve inner peace. The irony is almost beautiful. The truth is, many creators are sitting on something incredibly valuable without realizing it. It might be knowledge, experience, access, entertainment, advice, or simply a community of people who genuinely want to hear from them. The problem is that the internet trained us to give everything away for free.

“Can I pick your brain for five minutes?”

Of course.

Forty-seven minutes later, you have provided a complete business strategy, solved someone's marketing problems, reviewed their CV, recommended three books, and somehow become responsible for their five-year plan. At the end of the conversation, they say, “Thank you so much. This was really valuable.” You smile. Your bank account remains unchanged. Then comes the classic: “You should start charging for this!” Yes. Yes, you probably should.

Because followers are great. Likes are nice. Views are exciting. But at some point, you have to ask an important question: How exactly is all this attention helping me pay for lunch? And no, the answer is not necessarily “get more followers.” Sometimes, you do not need 100,000 followers. You might just need 100 people who are willing to pay for something valuable that you already know, create, or provide. That could be a private session. A consultation. Exclusive content. A community. Advice. A masterclass. Or simply access to you and your expertise.

The goal is not to turn into that person who suddenly puts a price tag on every sentence they say. You can still create free content. You can still help people. You can still answer questions. But maybe—just maybe—not every “Can I pick your brain?” needs to be a donation. Because having 10,000 followers is impressive. Having 10,000 followers and still borrowing KES 500? That is a different kind of achievement. At Inner Circle, we think creators should have more ways to turn their influence, knowledge, and communities into income.

So the next time someone asks to “pick your brain,” you might want to ask yourself one question: Is this a conversation… or should I send them my Inner Circle link?
